Horseshoe Bend, Arizona

from $150.00

Like many places, Horseshoe Bend has been overshot. Not in the sense that we need to stop, but in the sense that we have seen it so many times that it loses some of its grandness, scale, and magic. I drove down there from Bryce Canyon to catch the sunrise on the following day. Like most things nature related, you can’t depend on weather reports. When I arrived at the canyon the next morning, second to the lot and in complete desert darkness, I could tell there would be no sunrise. Daylight came and showed nothing but overcast, but I still held out. I watched tour bus by tour bus come through here and hundreds of people making quick National Lampoon-like photos before heading back to their respective buses. The wind was whipping and it was cold, and I just watched the clouds streak across the sky. And so I saw two places: the canyon below and the sky above. Each deserved their own space.
