There Was Only Ever One Way
(2021-Present)
There Was Only Ever One Way Out began as a collection, a way to savor the experiences of my solo travels, an attempt at a living journal of sorts. However, like other subjects I’ve focused on, there is a return to loss and even to grieving. In 2024, my oldest son received his driver’s permit, a true coming of age. As a father and a lover of the road, it has been revelatory to see that many of the coming-of-age generation beginning to drive don't have the same sense of auto adventure and the independence that I and many previous generations experienced when they started driving. In addition, I lost my mom to dementia in August of 2025, and during the last four years, all I ever wanted was to take her for one last drive - to show her there were still immense, beautiful, and hauntingly still places you could go to feel altogether connected, distant, and small. And so this project has also become a postcard to her.
Every photograph is made from the front seat of a car through the windshield or out the side as I travel, be it domestic or international. The result is that sometimes a photograph is tack sharp, and more often it is soft, blurry, and impressionistic, as a reminder that time doesn’t stand still, and neither does our experience on the road.
