Vidrio Wedding | Raleigh, NC | Amanda and Steven

When one of your first contact questions is “Why am I the right photographer for you?” And the couple answers with “because you have a nice beard.” You know that something special is happening. Creepy too, maybe, but mostly special. Beyond that, first weddings and last weddings of the year I put a lot of expectations on. Everyone wants to start the year of with a bang, and Amanda and Steven’s Vidrio wedding could not have been better or blown my expectations out of the water more than it did.

As with all of my couples, we take time to get to know one another. It starts with a phone call and then we move up to the in person, so we took our collective talents for some beers at State of Beer in downtown Raleigh. Steven had mentioned that one of the things that he loved most about Amanda was that they seem to know each other really well, as in better than they knew themselves in some cases. He also mentioned their penchant for sarcasm and may or may not have said they were both “super pretty.” Being a lover of all shades of sarcasm (it’s the northeasterner in me), I was excited for our first hang out, and it did not disappoint.

As someone who stays at home most days and sits in front of a screen, my social skills take a little warming up sometimes either that or I am over rambunctious to be talking to real live humans who are older than ten. Amanda and Steve were hysterical, riffing off each other and laying it on thick with the sarcasm and not letting me get away with little guffaws either. I was on my toes and I loved it. It’s moments like that have me immediately fall in love with a couple because it feels like we have known each other for years and yet it’s only been thirty minutes. And since we had only each had one beer, I knew it wasn’t the alcohol…this was real!

Being a dad and one who lives in Holly Springs, I don’t get out like I used to, so I didn’t know much about South Glenwood other than there is a Mellow Mushroom at one end that I have frequented, a tattoo shop around the corner I have been to once and a record shop at the other end of the block. But I was blown away with their venue choice, Vidrio Raleigh. It has some beautiful accents, tons of good light both up and downstairs and some fun artistic installations that really create a cool space for a wedding.

From Steven getting ready and ironing all of his groomsmen’s ties, to their first look in the neighboring parking garage, to their beautiful ceremony, sabered cake cutting and lit reception DJed by the always fun DJ Rang who played everything from pop to punk rock and everything in between and beyond.

And then Amanda and Steven took it up with a poof ball confetti exit (of which I just found the last poof ball in my lens pouch just last week - true story) followed by a Lime scooter escape down the crowded South Glenwood sidewalk.

It’s weddings like these that feel as if they moved too fast, that we didn’t savor the night enough, that we didn’t see or hear everything…and those are my favorites weddings because it is all just a flash and then we can slow down and relive it all through the photos. I can’t begin to say how much I laughed and smiled going through all of these again, and I hope that you enjoy them too!
